Create cookie-based display rules

You can easily customize the sign-up experience based on a visitor’s cookies with cookie-based display rules.

A cookie is a small piece of data that helps websites recognize a device. Cookies are a way to keep track of things like whether someone logs in, what pages they visit, what items they add to their shopping cart, and more.

For example, you might use a cookie to track users who log in to your brand’s website. You can then hide sign-up units from those users when that cookie is present because they’ve likely already had several opportunities to opt in to texts.

Before you begin

A few things to keep in mind:

  • You can only create one cookie-based display rule per sign-up unit. Display rules based on multiple cookies aren’t currently supported.
  • Cookie-based display rules aren’t dynamic. The platform applies cookie-based display rules when the page loads. If your website creates or updates cookies after the page loads, the platform doesn’t apply cookie-based display rules until the visitor refreshes the page or navigates away from the page and then back again.
  • Create multiple sign-up units to reach a wider audience. For example, you might create a sign-up unit that appears only when a cookie is present. To reach as many website visitors as possible, you can create another sign-up unit that appears when the cookie isn't present.
  • Setting an active sign-up unit to show when a cookie is present hides all other active sign-up units when that cookie is present. You don’t need to add the cookie to the hide list rules for sign-up units that shouldn’t appear when the cookie is present because Attentive hides them automatically.

  3. If the sign-up unit should only appear when a specific value for the cookie is present (e.g., “1” or “true”), enter that value in the with a value of field. Otherwise, leave this field blank. If you leave this field blank, the sign-up unit will appear any time the cookie is present, regardless of the cookie’s value.
