What is it?
The ATTV_GLOBAL_EXCLUSION_TAG is a specific label you can add to your products in Shopify. It acts as a hide command for Attentive’s automated email system. When this tag is applied, it prevents specific items (like shipping insurance, warranties, or seasonal add-ons) from appearing as dynamic product recommendations in your customers' inboxes. Note: The exclusion tag is only applicable for email.
However, it is important to note that the tag's behavior depends on the type of content block you use in the Attentive email editor:
- Where it works: The tag is strictly honored in the Product Recs block and the Dynamic Products block. These blocks will skip the tagged item and show the next available product instead.
- Where it is ignored: The tag is ignored if you use the Dynamic Image block. This block is designed to show a single hero image of the item that triggered the email. To avoid showing a blank space, the system will display the tagged product if it is the primary item.
- Manual Selections: Any product you manually drag and drop into an email will always be visible, regardless of whether it has the tag.
How do I use it?
Setting up exclusions is a simple process managed directly within your Shopify admin:

Tag the Product:
- In Shopify, go to Products and select the item you want to hide.
- In the Tags section, enter exactly: ATTV_GLOBAL_EXCLUSION_TAG

- Click Save.
- Wait for Sync: It can take up to 24 hours for the new tag to sync from Shopify to Attentive and begin filtering your emails.

Choose the Right Block: To ensure your exclusions are always respected, use the Product Recs or Dynamic Products blocks in your email journeys.
- Pro Tip: If you want to show only one product but still want to hide excluded items, use the Dynamic Products block and set it to display only one item.
- To Remove: Simply delete the tag from the product in Shopify and save.
Repeat steps 1-4 for each product you want to exclude from product recommendations. If you want to include a product in recommendations or multiple dynamic products again, remove ATTV_GLOBAL_EXCLUSION_TAG in Shopify.

Using this tag allows you to curate a more professional and high-converting email experience for your subscribers.
- Prioritize Visual Appeal: Products like shipping insurance or extended warranties often do not have attractive product imagery. Excluding them ensures your email real estate is used for your most visually appealing items.
- Drive Higher Click Through Rates: By filtering out utility items, you make room for actual product recommendations that a customer is more likely to click on and purchase.
- Maintain Brand Standards: You can prevent placeholder products or internal-only items from accidentally appearing in a "You Might Also Like" section, keeping your brand presentation clean and intentional.
