FAQs: Account architecture and authentication

Should I create a new domain for sending email?

No. Newly registered domains do not have an established reputation, and are often flagged by mailbox providers and blocklist operators if they're used to send large volumes of emails too soon after registration.

Should I use the same domain for email as I use for my website or store?

Yes! Using a domain that is different from your website can cause confusion for your email subscribers. Also, operating multiple email domains increases your risk of being spoofed by malicious actors.

For example, if your store’s website is https://www.attentivemobile.com, a good domain to send emails from would be:

  • attentivemobile.com

And bad examples include:

  • attentivemail.com
  • shopattentivemobile.com

Can I send email with a dedicated IP address?

Yes! We recommend using a dedicated IP address if you’re sending more than 600,000 emails per month. If you’re sending more than 50,000 emails per month, a dedicated IP address for sending email is required. Note that there are additional fees associated with using a dedicated IP address.

Is a dedicated IP address necessary for all brands?

No. Thousands of brands send email using a shared IP address, and many popular ESPs offer pools of shared IP addresses for their customers. Shared IP addresses are ideal if you’re sending a relatively low volume of emails per month as they incur fewer additional costs.

For some senders, a shared IP email address will outperform a dedicated email address. Because each customer using a shared IP address contributes to the IP address’s sending reputation, each customer can benefit from the good sending practices of the other customers. That said, shared IP addresses are only as good as the worst senders on the IP address.

Can I get a shared IP address from Attentive?

Yes! We offer a shared IP address that brands can use to send email. Customers using the Attentive shared IP address to send email are restricted to a maximum of 50,000 emails per month.

Note that if you’re using a shared IP address from Attentive, mailbox providers like Gmail will change how sender information is displayed using shared DKIM domains.

For customers with fully aligned DKIM, SPF, and FROM domains, your sent emails will appear as:

  • Attentive <no-reply@attentivemobile.com>

For customers just using a shared DKIM:

  • Attentive <name@attentivemobile.com> via shared.attentivemobile.com

What kind of authentication does Attentive use for emails I send?

As we configure your account to send email, we’ll provide you with DNS records to properly authenticate your emails with SPF and DKIM, both of which will aligned with your FROM domain.

Can you set the rDNS of my sending IP address to match my sending domain?

Yes, but only if you’re using a dedicated sending IP address.

Can I send subscribers email from my personal email account?

No. Attentive doesn't allow you to send your subscribers email from personal email accounts like Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or other personal inbox providers. Personal email accounts have volume limitations, and they also can’t be authenticated using SPF or DKIM, which will result in authentication failures.

Personal email providers are also protected by DMARC, which requires that messages sent from these domains have proper SPF and DKIM authentication.

Will email I send with Attentive be encrypted?

Yes, but only when subscriber inboxes accept inbound TLS v1.1 or higher encryption. If subscriber inboxes don't accept inbound TLS v1.1 encryption, we’ll send your email messages over an unencrypted connection.
