Preview and send test emails

In the email editor, you can preview how your emails will look to your subscribers. You can also send test emails to yourself or others on your team. If you use dynamic content to personalize emails, you can also preview emails with actual subscriber data.

Notes:

  • Previews and test emails with actual subscriber data are currently only available for emails in the following journey types:
    • Added to cart
    • Checkout started
    • Order confirmed
    • Made a purchase
    • Shipment Canceled
    • Order Delivered
    • Order Out for Delivery
    • Order Shipped
    • Order Canceled
    • Refund Failed
    • Order Refunded
    • Back in stock
    • Low inventory
    • Price drop
  • Unsubscribe link functionality in test and preview emails varies based on the type of unsubscribe page in use. When using a custom unsubscribe page, the unsubscribe link works as expected in previews and test sends. However, if the default unsubscribe page is used, unsubscribe links may not be clickable in previews or may lead to a 404 error. This behavior is expected and only affects preview and test emails; live emails still handle unsubscribe links as intended.

Preview an email

To preview an email:

  1. Click Preview in the email editor.
Preview button in the email editor.
    The Preview page appears.
  2. If your email contains dynamic content, use the arrows next to Previewing as to preview the email populated with actual values from up to ten different real subscribers. If subscriber values don’t exist, the preview shows the text of the dynamic variable (e.g., {{subscriber.FirstName}}).
Previewing as a random subscriber on the email preview page with the preview showing the selected subscriber’s first name where the 'subscriber.firstName' variable appears in the body of the email.
You can also preview campaign and journey email messages as a specific subscriber by clicking Preview as, selecting A specific subscriber, then entering the email address of the subscriber you want to preview as. We recommend copying the subscriber's email address from Subscribers.

  3. Review your Email size. If your email is larger than 102 KB, reduce the size of your emails to avoid clipping.
  4. Click Preview dark mode to turn on dark mode preview. For more information about designing emails with dark mode, see Optimize email for dark mode

Notes:

  • You can preview as a subscriber only if event data is available to populate dynamic variables. For example, in a cart abandonment journey that uses the {{triggerEvent.product.name}} variable, you can only preview actual values for subscribers who’ve added items to their carts.
  • Subscribers with event data that corresponds to the dynamic variable are randomly chosen for the preview. If no subscribers have event data that can populate the dynamic variable with an actual value, then you won’t see actual values for any variables, including static variables like {{companyAddress}}.
  • When subscriber or product data is missing, the preview displays <Missing variable.Name>, where variable.Name is the name of the type of dynamic content (see screenshot below).
  • If a default value is specified for a dynamic variable, the preview shows that data is missing, but your email will be sent using the default value (e.g., “friend” when the subscriber’s first name is missing). See Personalize your email with dynamic content for more information.
  • When product data is missing, your email is sent without the products that are missing data. If data for all products is missing, your email isn’t sent
