FAQs: Branching on segments

Can I make a new segment to branch on, or do I have to use existing ones?

Either! You can either use the search field to find an existing segment, or click + create a new segment to create a new dynamic segment for use in your journeys.

You can also use manual and third-party segments, but you’ll have to create those in the Segments tab.

Can I use any of my segments?

Yes! You can include manual, dynamic, and third-party segments, although you can only make new dynamic segments from within a journey.

Note that currently, you won’t be able to see how many subscribers are in each segment, so it’s a good idea to check how many subscribers belong to a segment before you branch on it.

What happens if a subscriber belongs to two or more segments in the same journey that send different messages?

Subscribers enter only the first branch path for the first segment that they are included in. Note that journey paths are counted from left to right. Also, keep in mind that normal message fatigue rules like Smart Sending are followed in all journeys unless manually disabled.

What happens if I make changes to a segment that’s part of an active journey?

Consistent with how we handle integrated features in journeys (e.g., Create Support Ticket steps), in order to edit or delete a segment that is used in an active or draft branch step, you will have to remove the segment from the branch step first.

What happens if a subscriber qualifies for more than one branch at a time?

If a subscriber meets the criteria for multiple branches at the same time, they enter only the left-most path in the journey.
