Review and correct errors in your email

While designing your email, you may see an message that lets you know your email contains unsupported variables or links when you try to preview or save your email.

Some reasons that a variable or link are unsupported include the following:

  • The message type doesn't support the variable or link (e.g., {{triggerEvent.checkout.checkoutLink}} can't be used in a campaign email message).
  • The variable contains a typo.
  • The link isn't properly formatted (e.g., it's missing https://).
  • The variable or link isn't formatted properly (e.g., it uses { instead of {{).

Review unsupported variables

Follow these steps to review and replace unsupported variables:

  1. In the banner at the top of the email editor, click Review text. The Unsupported variable popup window appears. 
  2. In the popup window, select a replacement from the Replacement drop-down for each unsupported variable. You can also choose Remove variable to remove it from your email altogether.
  3. After you select a replacement for each unsupported variable, click Save.

You can also remove variables directly in the text in the email editor.

Review unsupported links

Follow these steps to review and replace unsupported links:

  1. In the banner at the top of the email editor, click Review links. The Unsupported links popup window appears. 
  2. In the popup window, enter a URL or select a dynamic link from the Replacement drop-down for each unsupported link.

    Note: URLs must begin with http:// or https://.
  3. After you enter or select a replacement for each link, click Save.

If you want to remove a link, you can do so directly in the text in the email editor.

Replace unsupported variables and dynamic links with custom event data

If you send Custom Events API data to Attentive, you can use that data to replace unsupported variables or links:

  1. Follow the steps in the sections above for unsupported variables or links.
  2. In the Unsupported links or Unsupported variables popup window, select an event from the Replacement dropdown. If you don’t see the event you want to select, click Explore more to see all events.

  3. If you clicked Explore more, search for the object or property you want to use as a variable or link, then click Select.

    The Unsupported links or Unsupported variables window reappears. Continue selecting replacements for variables or links if needed.
  4. Click Save.

After you choose replacements for all unsupported variables or links, you can save, test, or send your email.
