Migrate your triggered email program to Attentive

Welcome to Attentive email! With Attentive, you can effectively orchestrate your email and text message marketing programs on one platform.

This guide is intended to help you get your triggered email program up and running. Generally speaking, there are several important steps you need to take to switch your triggered email program from another email service provider (ESP) to Attentive:

Your Attentive team will be there with you every step of the way. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need assistance!

Note: While most of the steps outlined in this guide are the same for every migration from another ESP to Attentive, there may be key differences with your specific migration. Please follow the guidance from your Attentive team if you’re not sure whether the steps in this guide apply to your migration.

If you’ve already set up your triggered email program to send emails in journeys and you’re interested in sending campaign emails, see Migrate your campaign email program to Attentive.

Step 1: Meet with your Attentive email team to get started

To help you get started, your Attentive CSM and Product Specialist will reach out to schedule a kickoff call and to send you our “Get Started Guide” for email.

In your kickoff call, your Attentive team will introduce themselves and Attentive’s email platform. They’ll also discuss some KPIs that we can use together to measure your success and outline the rest of the process to get your email program up and running.

After your kickoff call, you can get started with your migration!

Step 2: Set up an ESP integration in the App Marketplace

Attentive has integrations with a number of popular ESPs, including Klaviyo and Mailchimp. Setting up an integration with your current ESP can help streamline the migration process.

Note: Attentive currently supports ESP migrations from Klaviyo. Support for additional ESPs is coming soon!

Note: You can also export a list of your subscribers from your current ESP, which can be uploaded into Attentive. See Step 5: Upload your subscriber list for more information.

Klaviyo

Complete the following tasks to connect Attentive and Klaviyo:

  1. Follow the steps in the Klaviyo ESP integration article to set up an integration between Attentive and Klaviyo. This integration passes email addresses and associated information between the two platforms. If you want to use this integration to migrate your subscriber list, please reach out to your Attentive team. They can help you enable the integration and ensure that we’re collecting the information we need from Klaviyo.
  2. Follow the steps in the Klaviyo + Attentive identity article to add the klaviyo_id as a UTM parameter to the links in your Klaviyo emails. When you add the klaviyo_id as a UTM parameter, we can better identify your email subscribers when they browse your site, which increases triggered email volume.

Step 3: Set up other integrations

If your brand uses Shopify and you haven’t already set up the Shopify integration, follow the steps in the Shopify article.

Note: Shopify is the only eCommerce integration currently supported for Attentive email.

Step 4: Set up additional app access

Setting up access between Attentive and other applications, including Google Analytics and Shopify, can also help streamline the migration process.

  1. Grant access to performancetracking5@attentivemobile.com in your current ESP and Google Analytics:
    • In Klaviyo, grant Klaviyo Analyst Access to performancetracking5@attentivemobile.com.
    • In Mailchimp, grant Mailchimp Admin Access to performancetracking5@attentivemobile.com.
    • In Google Analytics, grant Google Analytics View-Only Access to performancetracking5@attentivemobile.com.
  2. Provide Google PostMaster access.
    • If Google Postmaster is configured for your email sending domain, please visit the Google Postmaster domain management portal and add deliveryops@attentivemobile.com as a user. You can do this by clicking the three dots to the right of your domain and then clicking Manage users. Click the red + to add new users.
  3. Integrate Shopify Email Collection via checkout/footer.
    • If you collect emails via Shopify checkout or a Shopify site footer, follow the steps in Collect email subscribers from Shopify to connect this collection to your Attentive email list in real-time.

Step 5: Upload your subscriber list

Next, you’ll need to export your subscriber list from your current ESP so that it can be uploaded into Attentive.

  1. Export your active US email subscriber list from your current ESP. Confirm that the following information is included in your export:
    • Mailchimp: include Member Rating, Phone Number.
    • Klaviyo: include Klaviyo ID, Phone Number, First Active, Last Active, Profile Created On, Date Added, Last Open, and Last Click. This information helps Attentive sync subscriber lists and improve email deliverability.

Note: At minimum, lists exported from Klaviyo must include each subscriber’s email address and Klaviyo ID.
    • For all ESPs, include phone numbers if your subscriber list has them. Phone numbers help us keep subscriber information consistent within Attentive.
  2. Fill out the Outside Subscriber List Certification Form. Once submitted, our team will check the form for completeness and let you know once the review is complete.
  3. After you receive notification that your Outside Subscriber List Certification Form has been reviewed, upload your subscriber list to the secure link provided by your Attentive team in your Get Started Guide.

Step 6: Set up your dedicated sending domain

Next, follow the steps in the Email Settings article to set up your sending domain.

In order to send emails through the Attentive platform, you must set up a sending domain. By default, this is a dedicated domain. Dedicated domains provide a consistent brand experience for your subscribers and can improve your email program’s overall email deliverability.

We don’t recommend sending from a shared domain because mailbox providers are more likely to flag emails from your brand as spam if they’re sent from a shared domain. That said, it’s possible to send emails from a shared domain through Attentive. Reach out to your Attentive team for more information.

Note: You can’t send emails through Attentive until domain setup is complete and your domain is verified. While your domain is being verified, however, you can create draft email campaigns and draft journeys with triggered emails.

Step 7: Migrate sign-up units

If you currently use Klaviyo or another service to collect subscriber email addresses or other information, you should re-create those sign-up units in the Attentive platform. Refer to the Create a new sign-up unit article for detailed instructions and links to additional resources to help you build those sign-up units in the Attentive platform.

Proceed to the next step if you already use Attentive-hosted sign-up units to collect subscriber information.

Step 8: Migrate and create new email journeys

You can now begin setting up journeys that include email messages. The following journey types in Attentive support email messages:

  • Back-in-stock
  • Browse abandonment
  • Cart abandonment
  • Checkout abandonment (Shopify only)
  • Joined a segment
  • Low inventory
  • Post-purchase
  • Price drop
  • Welcome
  • Winback

As you re-create and build new journeys in the Attentive platform, refer to the articles linked below to learn more about how you can build, optimize, and send emails in journeys.

Triggered email journey best practices

Email welcome journeys

Optimize email content and deliverability

As you design emails and add them to your journeys, refer to the following articles for more information about email design and deliverability best practices:

Additionally, the following best practices can also help maximize conversions:

  • The main call-to-action (CTA) should be “above the fold” (i.e., in the portion of the email visible without scrolling).
  • There should be only one or two CTAs.
  • Building brand value and loyalty isn’t achieved just by offering discounts. Good marketing includes educating, nurturing, keeping subscribers engaged, and sending emails they want to receive.

Step 9: Meet with your Attentive email team to launch your email program

After you finalize your initial set of journeys with triggered emails, reach out to your Attentive team. They’ll ensure that your journeys are properly configured and schedule your launch call.

Keep in mind that after you launch Attentive SMS and email journeys, we’ll ask you to deactivate any existing cart or browse abandonment triggered emails on your previous ESP. This is to ensure that your subscribers don’t receive duplicate emails. You’ll do this together with your Attentive team on your launch call.
