Display conditions for email

What is it?

Display conditions allow you to dynamically personalize your emails by showing or hiding specific content rows based on your subscribers' unique profile attributes. Instead of duplicating entire layouts or managing multiple separate email campaigns for different subscriber cohorts, you can target and message various audience variations directly within a single master template.

With our enhanced display conditions builder—available across both the drag-and-drop editor—you can create sophisticated, layout-level rules completely code-free. The builder supports three main types of logic:

  • Attribute Matching: Show or hide content when a subscriber's profile attribute exactly matches or does not match a specific value (e.g., showing a "Welcome" banner to loyalty members and an "Enroll Now" banner to non-members).
  • Variable Existence Checks: Show specific content rows based on whether an attribute simply exists on a subscriber’s profile, without needing to specify or match an exact value (e.g., displaying pet product rows exclusively to subscribers who have any pet type recorded).
  • Advanced Numeric Comparisons: Evaluate numeric attributes to see if a value is greater than, less than, or equal to a specific number (e.g., targeting high-value subscribers whose loyalty balance is over 500 points).

Note: Operators are based on the data type of the custom attribute selected. For example, if your attribute was uploaded as a string, you will not be able to utilize it in the same manner as you would a number. If a different attribute type is needed, create a new custom attribute with the required type via a net new upload.

Data Type Options
Number Is, Is not, Is greater than or equal to, Is greater than, Is less than, Is less than or equal to, Exists, Does not exist
String Is, Is not, Exists, Does not exist
Enum Is, Is not, Exists, Does not exist
Boolean Is, Is not, Exists, Does not exist

How do I use it?

You can configure and manage display conditions natively from the email builder sidebar:

  1. Create or edit an email message within a campaign or journey.
  2. Select the specific row you want to add display conditions to.
  3. In the right-hand ROWS sidebar panel, scroll down to the DYNAMIC CONTENT section and click Manage condition.
    • Note: You can use dynamic content with all block types except for Product Recommendations and Dynamic Product blocks, as they already utilize dynamic content.
  4. On the Display condition page, enter a Condition name and an optional description.
  5. Build your logic using the rule fields:
    • First Field (Variable): Select the target subscriber or custom attribute variable from the dropdown list.
    • Second Field (Operator): Choose how the system should evaluate the variable. Options include standard operators like is or is not, advanced numeric comparison operators (e.g., greater than, less than), or the Exists operator (Exists or Does not exist).

  • Third Field (Value): Enter or select the exact value the condition should evaluate against. (Note: This field will disappear and is not required if you use the "Exists" operator).
  1. (Optional) Click Or or And to stack rules and build more complex conditional logic. You can add up to five display conditions per individual row.
  2. Click Save. Your configured rule will now appear in the Dynamic Content panel.

Note: Display conditions must be configured for each email row individually, and they cannot be applied to synced rows. If an existing synced row for an individual email design requires dynamic content, simply unsync the row.

Why should I use it?

  • Code-Free Personalization: You can construct highly specialized, relevant layouts directly inside the visual design interface. This eliminates the need to draft, troubleshoot, or maintain complex custom Liquid code workarounds.
  • Streamlined Email Management: Consolidating multiple subscriber variations into one template reduces the time spent building, testing, and maintaining separate campaigns. It keeps your template library clean and your workflows highly efficient.
  • Increased Engagement and Conversion: Personalizing messages down to the individual row level—such as offering tier-specific rewards, filling in content based on zero-party data, or acknowledging milestone balances—helps your audience receive a tailored experience and drive stronger click-through rates and revenue.
