What is segmentation?

Segmenting allows you to send targeted, personalized messages to a specific group of subscribers or subscribers who meet conditions that you specify.

There are two types of segments:

  • Manual segments are one-time lists that you upload into Attentive using a CSV file. Manual segments are static and don't update automatically.
  • Dynamic segments are built using logic to find subscribers who've engaged in an activity, meet specified demographic conditions, or belong to another segment. A dynamic list updates as new subscribers meet the criteria.
Note: Segment templates offer pre-filled options for building segments, which you can use to target common groups of subscribers.

What kind of segment should I build?

Manual

Use a manual segment if you want to reach specific subscribers who meet a specific criterion, such as:

"I want to reach subscribers who were VIP status as of January 1, 2021."

You don't want this segment to update dynamically whenever another subscriber meets VIP status. You want a "snapshot" as of January 1, 2021.

Dynamic

Use a dynamic segment if you want to build a set of rules and then add subscribers to the segment as they meet the rules, such as:

"I want to reach any subscriber who purchases a red sweater at any time."

You want this segment to update whenever someone purchases a red sweater.
