Send email to international subscribers

With Attentive, you can send email messages to subscribers outside the United States to any other country where you send text messages through the Attentive platform.

To send email to international subscribers, you’ll first need to build an email-only sign-up unit. These sign-up units only collect email addresses, not phone numbers. You’ll also need to build a segment of subscribers from countries where you don’t send text messages through the Attentive platform. Follow the instructions below to get started!

Before you begin

There are a few important things to know about sending international email through the Attentive platform:

  • You must already be sending text messages through the Attentive platform in the US.
  • If you only send text messages to US subscribers, you’ll manage your Attentive international email program from your US text message account.
  • If you send text messages to subscribers in the US and another country, you’ll manage your international email program from that country’s account. For example, if you send text messages to subscribers in Canada, you’ll manage your Canada email program from your Canada text message account. For any country where you don’t send text messages, you’ll manage your international email program from your US text message account.

Build email-only sign-up units

To send email to subscribers who live in countries where you don’t send text messages, you need to build and activate at least one email-only sign-up unit.

Build a new email-only sign-up unit

Follow these steps to build and activate an email-only sign-up unit:

  1. Go to the Sign-up Units tab.
  2. Click + Create sign-up flow.
  3. Click Choose template; then click Continue. See Create a new sign-up unit for more information.
  4. When editing the design (using a template) or in the Design step (when building a custom sign-up unit), click the X next to SMS to remove SMS collection from the sign-up unit.

  5. In the popup window, click Remove SMS.

Set up which countries should see email-only sign-up units

When you remove SMS collection from a sign-up unit, Attentive automatically creates a new display rule that hides the sign-up unit from users in the United States.

Build dynamic segments by country

You can use subscriber country information to create dynamic segments.

Note: When location information (including country) is collected for subscribers, it may take up to 24 hours before you can use that information to segment those subscribers.

Follow these steps to create a new dynamic segment:

  1. Go to Segments.
  2. Click + Create segment.
  3. Next to Dynamic segment, click Create.
  4. In the Choose condition dropdown, select A subscriber’s characteristics.
  5. In the Choose characteristic dropdown, select Country, recent or Country, residence.
  6. Choose is or is not, then select the countries that define the segment. You can also start typing to search for the countries you want to select.

Note: When you choose is not, the segment doesn’t include subscribers for whom country information is unspecified. For example, if you create a segment where the country is not the United States, the segment includes subscribers from any country other than the US. It doesn’t include subscribers for whom country information is unspecified.

  7. (Optional) You can also create City, State, and Zip segments with country-specific values. Select from the Country dropdown, then select the values that define the segment.
