Create an email segment

Build dynamic segments for subscribers who’ve signed up for, or interacted with, your email campaigns. You can use email event segments to send personalized email and SMS messages to a targeted audience.

If you’re using email with Attentive or the Klaviyo integration, you can segment the following types of activity:

  • Subscribed to email: Segment subscribers from a particular time period.
  • Received an email: Segment Attentive or Klaviyo subscribers from a particular time period. Use the Filter button to segment emails from one or more specific campaigns.
  • Opened an email: Segment Attentive or Klaviyo subscribers who opened an email from you within a particular time period. Use the Filter button to segment emails from one or more specific campaigns.
  • Clicked an email link: Segment Attentive or Klaviyo subscribers who clicked an email link within a particular time period. Use the Filter button to segment emails from one or more specific campaigns.

Create an email segment

  1. On the Segments page, click + Create segment.
  2. Next to Dynamic segment, click Create.
  3. In the Choose condition drop-down, click A subscriber’s activity.
  4. In the Choose activity drop-down, scroll to the EMAIL section. Select the email activity you want to create a segment for.
Dropdown labeled 'Choose activity' with options like 'Subscribed to text' and 'Received an email,' the latter highlighted with a tooltip that reads 'The number of times a subscriber received an email,' plus buttons to delete or add conditions.
  5. Fill out the remaining conditions and time frames to customize the email segment. These fields vary depending on the type of activity you select in step 4.
  6. (Optional) Click + or + Condition group to add another condition or group of conditions to this segment. See Create a dynamic segment for more information about creating advanced segmentation rules by nesting conditions with AND/OR logic in condition groups.
    • Any: Subscribers who meet one or more of the conditions are added to the segment.
    • All: Subscribers who meet both of the conditions are added to the segment.
  7. Click Create.

Has/Has not exclusion terms

When you configure your email segment, you can click the Has/Has not drop-down to filter subscribers who have or haven’t met the configured conditions. For example, you can create a segment for subscribers who’ve received an email from you, but have not opened it.

Segment builder with two conditions: the first specifies 'Has received an email from Attentive at least once in the last 90 days,' and the second specifies 'Has not opened an email from Attentive at least once in the last 90 days,' with dropdown menus, filter buttons, and options to delete or add conditions or condition groups.
