Send Shopify Transactional and Promotional Journeys

By integrating Shopify with Attentive, you can automate your customer communication via text, email, and push using real-time data synced directly from your store. Selecting the most appropriate trigger ensures that your customers receive timely, relevant information—from order receipts to marketing follow-ups.

What is it?

Attentive provides a suite of triggers designed to sync natively with your Shopify account. These triggers allow you to build journeys based on the following Shopify-synced events:

  • Order confirmed (transactional)
  • Order confirmed (promotional)
  • Order shipped
  • Order out for delivery
  • Order delivered
  • Order cancellation
  • Order refunded
  • Refund failed
  • Shipment canceled

Choosing Your Journey Type

While most triggers correspond to a specific shipment update, you have two options for your initial post-purchase communication:

  • Order confirmed (transactional): Use this for transactional-only content sent to all customers.
  • Order confirmed (promotional): Use this dedicated trigger to engage marketing subscribers with upsell and cross-sell content after they purchase, without impacting your transactional flows.

We recommend activating both Order confirmed journeys to ensure every customer receives essential order updates while subscribers stay engaged with your brand’s latest promotions.

Check out this article if you need help understanding transactional vs. promotional journeys.

Note: To ensure a positive subscriber experience, do not enable both an Order confirmed journey and a Made a purchase journey for the same activity. If you are considering a transition between these triggers, please consult with your Customer Success Manager (CSM).

How do I use it?

To maintain a high-quality customer experience, select the trigger that matches your intended audience and content.

For Shopify journeys, specifically, follow the steps below:

Disable Shopify Notifications

To prevent subscribers from receiving duplicate messages, you should turn off the corresponding notifications in Shopify before enabling your Attentive journeys.

  • For Shopify Plus: You can disable notifications for Order confirmation, Canceled orders, Refunds, and Shipping updates.
  • For all Shopify users: You can disable Abandoned Checkout notifications under Settings > Checkout.

Incorporate Dynamic Content

We recommend using variables and dynamic links to personalize your messages:

  • {{subscriber.firstName}}: Recipient's first name.
  • {{triggerEvent.order.number}}: The Shopify order number.
  • {{triggerEvent.order.statusLink}}: A dynamic link to the Shopify order status page.

Note: If you are not a Shopify Plus merchant, some journeys cannot be deactivated in Shopify. In this case, you should export the HTML from Attentive and import it into Shopify's notification settings to ensure a consistent brand look.

Why should I use it?

Leveraging native Shopify triggers provides several advantages for your brand's communication strategy.

Enhanced Data Synchronization

The Order confirmed triggers utilize a direct server-to-server connection with Shopify. This native integration is designed for high-performance environments, providing a highly stabilized data flow. If you are looking for the most direct synchronization between your Shopify storefront and your Attentive journeys, these triggers are the recommended choice.
