Use cases: Joined a segment journeys

Heads up: this article assumes that you're already familiar with how journeys work in general, and how joined a segment journeys work in particular. If you haven't yet, you may want to check out the following before proceeding here:

Attentive’s joined a segment journeys allow brands to easily reach any audience with timely, automated message—–unlocking alternative methods to implementing a variety of use cases.

Chances are, you have an idea of who your best segments are and what they care about. But just in case, here’s an outline of high-impact use cases and their supporting segments.

Reward VIP customers after multiple purchases

It’s easy to set up a series of automated messages that make your VIP customers feel special and keep them engaged. Once someone spends the set amount or surpassed a number of purchases, they’re entered into the VIP segment to automatically receive a text, introducing them to your loyalty program.

Dynamic segment conditions:

  • Has made a purchase more than [X number of times] in the last [Y number of days]
    [optional] AND lifetime spend is more than [$ amount] (Shopify only)

    Note: Requires that you've connected your product data to Attentive, either with an integration like Shopify or using the product catalog API.

Sample message copy:

  • Thanks for being a loyal customer! Join [loyalty program name] to earn points with each purchase and unlock exclusive rewards! [link]

Cross-sell products that are typically purchased together

Getting familiar with your individual consumers is pivotal for your business. Many brands concentrate on retention but cross- and upselling is just as important! By leveraging a subscriber's previous purchase history, you can send personalized recommendations for complementary products.

Dynamic segment conditions:

  • Has made a purchase at least once in the last [X number of days] where product [property] is [Y]
  • AND has not made a purchase at least once in the last [X number of days] where product [property] is [Z]

Sample message copy:

  • Based on your recent purchases, we have some recommendations! People that bought our [product X] also loved [product Y]. 😎 Check it out: [link]

Incentivize repeat purchases and promote retention

Ensuring that the customers return and purchase from you again has never been more critical. Stay top of mind to maintain your competitive advantage and encourage additional purchases based on your purchase cycle.

Note: You can accomplish this use case with post-purchase journeys, too.

Dynamic segment conditions:

  • Has made a purchase equal to 1 in the last [X number of days]

Sample message copy:

  • Thanks for shopping with us! To show our appreciation, here’s [10% OFF] your next order. SHOP NOW: [link]

Re-engage subscribers that haven’t purchased in a while

Do you have customers who were loyal to you but suddenly haven’t made any purchases for a couple of months? Chances are high that they started shopping elsewhere, and you want them back … and few things bring customers back the way a good discount can.

Note: You can accomplish this use case with a winback journey, too.

  • Has not made a purchase at least once in the last [X number of days]

Celebrate subscriber yearly anniversaries with incentives

Everyone wants to feel special and your subscribers are no exception. Taking a moment to celebrate their anniversaries will help you build stronger connections and brand loyalty. Also, use this opportunity to offer discounts to drive more revenue and increase LTV.

Dynamic segment conditions:

  • Has not subscribed to text in the last 364 days
  • AND has subscribed to text in the last 365 days

Sample message copy:

  • Can you believe it’s been a year since you first signed up for text alerts?! To celebrate, take [25% OFF] with this [dynamic offer code]. Thank you for a wonderful year 🎉

    Note: You can use unique or shared discount codes with joined-a-segment journeys, but not integrated offers like Shopify auto-gen offer codes. Because joined-a-segment journeys may trigger for multiple subscribers at the same time, these messages could get dropped if the offer depletes more quickly than it can be replenished.

Promote product knowledge to improve the purchase experience

Reaching out with product updates or post-purchase instructions are excellent ways for a brand to engage its customers. For subscribers that have purchased a specific product, share at-home care instructions or tips for getting the most out of their new product.

Note: You can accomplish this use case with post-purchase journeys, too.

  • Has made a purchase at least once in the last [X number of days] where product [property] is [Y]

Sample message copy:

  • Hey there! I hope you’re happy with [product name X]. Here are a few tips for [intended product use]: [link]

Tips for optimizing your joined a segment journeys

  • By default, the entry frequency is set to 6 months. We recommend adjusting this based on your messaging cycle. To change the entry frequency of a journey, click the J-JAS-US-hexbolt.png icon in the upper-right corner of the journey, and then set entry frequency.
  • Subscribers enter joined a segment journeys as soon as they join the attached segment, whether that’s from a dynamic condition that’s met or a manual upload.
  • We highly recommend adding branch steps to filter subscribers down different journey paths, based on unique actions.
  • For the best subscriber experience, we suggest that you leave quiet hours on for each message as subscribers may join a segment at any point throughout the day.
