Migrate your email and SMS program from Yotpo to Attentive

This guide walks you through the steps to migrate your Yotpo Email and SMS programs to Attentive via the Shopify integration. You’ll also find best practices and next steps to ensure your migration goes smoothly.

Account Access

Make sure you have the necessary account access and have your SMS setup configured in Attentive.

  • If you plan to migrate your SMS contacts from Yotpo, you must first set up SMS in Attentive.
  • The carriers require you to notify subscribers before you start sending from a new number.
  • Fill out the Outside Subscriber List Certification form which will allow Attentive to transfer your subscribers from Yotpo to Attentive.

Get Set Up Before You Sync

Before you migrate your subscribers, make sure your sign-up units, journeys, and email/SMS campaigns are ready in Attentive. Once the sync happens, your list is live — so having everything set up means you can start engaging customers right away without any downtime.

Note: The migration only happens once. After the sync, any new opt-ins or opt-outs in Yotpo won’t carry over, which could cause compliance issues or missed messages.

Pre-work: Build sign-up units and welcome journeys in Attentive so they’re ready to activate as soon as you migrate. Submit Outside Subscriber List Certification form. 
Step 1: Remove existing sign-up units from your site so net-new subscribers don’t enter your Yotpo account.
Step 2: Enable the integration between Shopify and Attentive. This action both migrates existing subscribers and also installs Attentive’s tag on your site.
Step 3: Set your Attentive sign-up units and associated journeys live. This action allows you to capture new subscribers compliantly while you finish your account set-up.
Step 4: Send migration message to existing subscribers. This will be completed in conjunction with an Attentive representative.

Data synced from Yotpo to Attentive

Once you install the Shopify integration in Attentive, all subscribers from your connected Yotpo store will be automatically synced to Attentive in a one-time migration (not an ongoing sync). It may take up to 24 hours for the subscribers to appear in your Attentive account.

Note: New subscribers will continue to be added/removed while account provisioning is underway. Once the account goes live in Attentive, the sync stops.

The following data is synced from Yotpo to Attentive:

  • Email subscriptions
  • SMS subscriptions 

Static lists in Yotpo will be automatically imported as static segments in Attentive. Any dynamic lists that exist in Yotpo (e.g. purchased in last 30 days) will need to be built as a dynamic segment in Attentive.

Notify your subscribers that you have a new phone number (Required)

Once your data syncs and your subscribers are in the Attentive UI, notify your Attentive representative that you are ready to send your migration message.

US mobile carriers require brands to follow a formal migration process when moving

their SMS program to a new phone number.

Here is the message you must send from Attentive:

Hi from our new number! If you need help with anything or have questions, email us

at support@companyname.com. Msg frequency varies. Reply STOP to stop.

While this message can be edited, you must include:

  • How to opt out (Reply Stop to stop)
  • Customer care contact information (support email address)
  • Message frequency disclosure (Msg frequency varies)

An Attentive representative will schedule a call with you to send your “migration message” out to your subscribers and activate your account.

After migrating your data

After the migration, there are a few important steps you should take to ensure a smooth transition.

Turn off all subscriber collection methods in Yotpo

Once you import, you should immediately stop collecting new subscribers in Yotpo. Maintaining lists of subscribers on two different platforms is not only difficult but is a risky compliance move, especially for SMS.

  1. In Yotpo, navigate to Audience.
  2. On the Subscriber Collection Tools page, scroll down to My tools.
  3. Click the three horizontal dots next to a live tool.
  4. From the menu, click Edit to view this tool.
  5. At the top, open the Status dropdown.
  6. Select Draft.
  7. Click Save as Draft.

Repeat this process for any other live subscriber-collection tools. In addition, edit or remove any place you’ve linked to these opt-in pages, such as on your social media pages or QR codes.

Take note of key settings in your Yotpo account

When you migrate to a new service provider, there’s no guarantee they use the same settings. This can lead to significant differences in your data, so a key part of migration is noting down your current settings. In particular, pay attention to the following:

  • Conversion windows and how attribution works in Attentive
  • UTM tracking
  • Smart Sending

To find these settings in Yotpo, open the Settings dropdown in the left sidebar, and then click General Settings. Navigate to Attribution for your conversion and UTM settings and Compliance for Smart Sending.

If you are also moving your SMS plan to Attentive, make sure to write down your subscribe keywords and check your quiet hours.
